Who is Goddess Saraswati?
Goddess Saraswati is the daughter of Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe. She is often portrayed as a graceful figure in a white saree, seated on a lotus, which symbolizes purity and enlightenment. In her hands, she holds a veena (a musical instrument), representing the harmony between knowledge and art. Her four hands embody mind, intellect, alertness, and ego, reflecting the complete journey of learning.
The Legend of Saraswati Maa
One of the most well-known legends surrounding Saraswati Mata is her involvement in the creation of the universe. According to mythology, when Lord Brahma fashioned the world, he found it to be chaotic and disordered. In response, he meditated, and from his mouth emerged the luminous goddess Saraswati. Her wisdom and knowledge instilled structure and meaning into the world, guiding humanity toward learning and enlightenment.
Another captivating tale suggests that Saraswati Devi had a crucial role in the Mahabharata. It is said that when sage Vyasa was composing the epic, Goddess Saraswati blessed him, granting him the divine knowledge needed to write this monumental scripture.
How is Saraswati Pooja Celebrated?
Saraswati Pooja is celebrated with immense devotion throughout India, particularly in Assam, Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, and South India. Here’s how devotees honor this sacred occasion:
1. Worship of Books and Musical Instruments
As Saraswati Mata represents knowledge and the arts, devotees place books, musical instruments, and educational tools at her feet to receive her blessings. Students, artists, and scholars seek her divine grace for wisdom and success.
2. Wearing Yellow Attire
Yellow is regarded as an auspicious color for Saraswati Pooja, symbolizing energy, wisdom, and prosperity. Devotees don yellow clothing and present yellow flowers, especially marigolds, to the goddess.
3. Recitation of Saraswati Vandana
Chanting the Saraswati Vandana, “Ya Kundendu Tusharahara Dhavala,” is a vital part of the celebrations. This powerful mantra is believed to invoke divine blessings, sharpening intellect and creativity.
4. Special Prasad Offerings
The festival is incomplete without special bhog (prasad) offerings. Sweets like boondi ladoo, kesari halwa, and fruits are prepared and distributed among devotees.
5. Kite Flying Tradition
In northern India, particularly in Punjab and Rajasthan, kite flying is a popular tradition on Vasant Panchami. The sky is filled with vibrant kites symbolizing joy, prosperity, and freedom.
